Description
Wire networks are fundamental subsystems whose correct functioning is of critical importance. Ensuring their reliable use requires the availability of techniques capable of detecting the presence of faults that could potentially put in jeopardy the infrastructures relying on these networks. This Special Session combines the recent state of the art of electromagnetic time reversal (TR) techniques applied in the field of wired network diagnosis and shows the evolution of future activities in this domain. It provides new perspectives and new research domains.

Description
The need for NDT&E has increased dramatically along with the exponentially increased applications of advanced materials in various industrial sectors. As an interdisciplinary field, NDT&E is closely linked to engineering, material science, computer science, etc. In fact, any advance in these related fields that can examine the inside of material, improve the characterizing and identifying process is useful for NDT&E. Particularly, much research in recent years has focused on employing machine learning in NDT&E and have established that machine learning can improve the robustness and sensitivity of the inspection system as well as make the system more automatic.

Traditional navigation measurement techniques do not possess the characteristics of intelligence, which means that the accuracy cannot be self-improved during operation. Meanwhile, the navigation ability of some animals would be enhanced in familiar environments. The Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine was awarded to scientists who discovered the animal's brain navigation cells in 2014, which made the research of intelligent or “brain-like” navigation popular. Moreover, the development of AI makes great progress in many traditional technologies. Therefore, how to endow traditional navigation measurement technologies with intelligence by combining with AI has great scientific significance.

Ambient intelligence technologies include the sensors, procedures, and systems used to create smart environments that respond intelligently to the presence of people. Examples of ambient intelligence environments include smart homes (e.g., smart security systems, health care monitoring, adaptive climatization, personalized entertainment), smart cities (e.g., wireless sensor networks, intelligent air monitoring, adaptive traffic control, personalized transport services), or intelligent vehicles (e.g., adaptive speed adjustment, traffic analysis, pedestrian detection). Recently, the introduction of miniaturized instrumentation, small and general-purpose computing architectures, advanced communication networks, and non-intrusive measurement procedures has fostered the research and development of numerous and innovative ambient intelligence environments able to sense, communicate, and respond intelligently and transparently to the presence of different people.

Digitalization and “Industry 4.0” offer many exciting opportunities for process and manufacturing industries. However, many companies still perceive these trends as a threat. With an ageing and limited work- force, operators of existing process facilities lack technologies and concepts that provide a step by step approach to getting the most out of digitalization. Sensors and innovative sensing concepts have the potential to be the key element of successful digitalization. Enhancing the range and volume of sensed parameters in existing industries coupled with under- standing how to interpret and use the data yields the potential for reduced operating costs and new business models. If these technologies meet the needed performance levels at a reasonable cost, they can significantly lower the barrier for enterprises, large and small, to embrace digitalization. Developing such concepts creates exciting technological challenges, e.g. in the areas of robust low-cost sensing, sensor networks, fusion algorithms, artificial intelligence, self-validation, non-invasive and general model-based sensing.

In recent years, there have been a number of exciting developments that promise to make significant improvements to fiber optic sensing field. The aim of this special session is to survey the current FOSs state-of-the-art, as well as to provide a forum for reporting some of the significant recent advances in this field.
